The Honda Sports Tourer appears - The ST1100
This, the first generation of motorcycles from Honda which were given the name 'Pan European', appeared in the early 1990s
Powered by an 1100cc engine, the machine quickly and very deservedly engendered strong affection and respect among those who rode it either for work or for pleasure
Category One responders regarded it as a real workhorse that rode like a racehorse while tourers regarded it as the ultimate in long distance motorcycle travel, being able to effortlessly cover hundreds of miles on one tank of fuel in comfort and at speed if that was demanded
Many regard the standard one piece seat on the 1100 to be among the best around and it is almost universally understood to be far more comfortable than the two part seat fitment on the later ST1300
The ST1100 suffers in terms of corrosion of the carbon steel rear swingarm and the occasionally untimely failure of the swingarm bearings. The exhaust collector box being made of carbon steel almost always failed and the alternator and some cabling proved wanting when trying to cope with the electrical demands imposed upon it by the riders. Of late, ignition switches and alternators seem to be causing some electrical problems
The ST1100 however and despite production having ceased when the ST1300 arrived in 2001/2, continues delivering great satisfaction and enjoyment for the many remaining loyal and discerning private owners and enthusiasts as well as for a good number of motorcycle couriers throughout the UK and elsewhere
